So the end of the year always comes with it time for reflection and new promises for the new year. 2014 is no different, what a year it has been for Freedom Tree!
This year we saw our first birthing clinic completed. In the first 2 months of operating, the clinic saw over 500 patients, 74 women for pre and post natal visits and 7 babies born! 4 boys and 3 girls.
Ebola was a huge blow to Sierra Leone this year. Shortly after our team left in June, the country declared a state of emergency, and what seemed a small isolated outbreak spread throughout 3 countries in West Africa. Freedom Tree supporters were generous in their support and donations and we have been able to over the last 5 months work with the most needy to provide basic food to villages that were quarantined, hygiene kits to villages at risk and basic supplies for health workers.
One of the tragic by products of Ebola is the increase in the number of orphans in the country. Many children are now without parents to care for them. Freedom Tree was able to provide Christmas meals for a number of them as well as supply christmas gifts in the form of new clothing for them.
Here in Calgary we did a fundraiser selling ties for Christmas – Take a look at the link below:
Also this year Freedom Tree was honoured to be the YMCA Calgary Peace medal award recipient for service to the international community!!!
Looking ahead into 2015, we will continue to support our brothers and sisters in Sierra Leone to see Ebola defeated, and in addition work with communities to reduce infant and maternal mortality.
Thank you for a great year Freedom Tree supporters and look forward to many more!
