Our problem

In Canada, mothers look forward to celebrating the birth of their child. In Sierra Leone, there is no celebration to be had until mum and baby are safely through the dangerous passage of birth. There are 5 main contributing factors to maternal mortality – lack of access to healthcare, poor infrastructure, social practices, education, and community ownership. Freedom Tree has built 5 pillars around which to address them.

Follow Mariatu’s story below to see how her journey is impacted by each of these 5 pillars.

In Sierra Leone

8 women die from pregnancy related causes every single day.
80% of maternal deaths could be avoided if women had access to basic health facilities.
20% of those who survive will not live to see their 5th birthday.
