The Beginning of a Life-Changing Mission in Africa
The thick, humid air wrapped around me like a heavy blanket as I stepped onto Sierra Leonean soil for the first time. The scent of the earth—rich and warm—mingled with the saltiness of the ocean breeze. The airport buzzed with movement and voices, a whirlwind of colors and sounds that felt both overwhelming and electrifying.
I clutched my bag tightly—not out of fear, but because I felt so small in this vast, unfamiliar place. My heart pounded, not just from the heat, but from the unknown. Fresh out of school, my head was filled with ideas, and my heart was wide open to the possibilities of a maternal health mission in Africa. Why not? I had thought.
That first step off the plane was more than just stepping onto foreign soil—it was stepping into a purpose that would forever change the course of my life.
Two Decades of Transformation in Maternal Health
I didn’t know then how many faces, names, and stories would become etched into my heart. I didn’t know how much this place—this work—would shape me.
I didn’t know how hard the road ahead would be.
But I also didn’t know how much beauty I would find. How much love. How much resilience.
Step by step. Village by village. Little by little.
Now, twenty years later, I look back at that moment—the young woman stepping off the plane—and I feel both gratitude and awe.
The journey hasn’t always been easy. The past year alone, 2024, stretched us in ways I never imagined. We grew—new offices, new team members, new territories—but growth never comes without its struggles.
As we expanded our maternal health programs in Sierra Leone, we encountered logistical hurdles, financial strains, and the constant push to balance quality with scale. Each new challenge tested our resilience, but they also strengthened our resolve.
A Year of Challenges and Triumphs in Sierra Leone
Despite the obstacles, this year has also been filled with incredible progress. We celebrated new partnerships that opened doors to even more opportunities. Our dedicated team continued to make a tangible difference in the communities we serve. Every milestone reached, every mother and child helped, reminded us why maternal health in Sierra Leone is so important.
At the heart of our mission are the families we serve—the mothers whose lives are transformed, the babies given a healthier start, and the communities empowered with new hope. While the road has been tough, the moments of triumph, connection, and lasting impact have made every challenge worthwhile.
We are also deeply aware of the larger context—why Sierra Leone remains one of the poorest countries in the world and how this impacts maternal healthcare. Limited access to medical facilities, economic instability, and systemic healthcare challenges all contribute to the urgency of our mission.
And through it all, we are still here.
Moving Forward—Together for Maternal Health in Africa
Still showing up for the mothers, the babies, and the families who need us.
Because improving maternal health in Sierra Leone still matters.
And as we look ahead, we know we’re not walking this road alone.
You are here.
You, who care. You, who believe in this mission. You, who refuse to look away.
Twenty years ago, I stepped into the unknown. Today, I stand in awe of how far we’ve come—because of people like you.
And I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Thank you for walking this road with us.
